How do Suction Effective Dentures (SEMCD) Work

What Are Suction Dentures?

Losing teeth can be absolutely devastating from both a physical and psychological perspective. Although for some, they see it as a natural part of aging. For others, it can be hard to come to terms with.

After all, our teeth are extremely important. They are essential for eating and digestion, and they're also vital to our appearance. As they're so important, many people will choose to wear dentures or prosthesis. The right dentures can make a noticeable difference in making a person feel and look good, and give them confidence.

For a long time, the best way to install and maintain dentures was believed to be through adhesives. These days, things are in a state of change as we move away from adhesives and towards suction effective dentures (SEMCD). If you've run into past denture problems like the adhesives tasting bad, being ineffective, or having it feel uncomfortable, SEMCD is an excellent way to resolve all these complaints.

As denturists ourselves, we're always looking at ways to create the perfect dentures for our patients. Ideally, the right dentures for a patient will stay in place, fit well, and maintain stability so that a wearer does not have to adjust their jaw or tongue movements. Using conventional dentures, this is a challenge. With SEMCD, also sometimes referred to as suction effective mandibular dentures, this is significantly easier. For patients struggling with lower dentures floating or lifting, SEMCD are something we strongly recommend considering.

How suction effective dentures work is, as you may have guessed, from suction. There's no adhesives or implants in the application of SEMCD. This process begins by developing a unique impression of a patient's oral cavity, recording and duplicating the natural shapes in the mouth down to every detail. The result is a mold that fits well, to the utmost degree, to a patient's cavity. As the dentures are put in, they are sealed in during suction which holds the dentures in place.

Poor fitting dentures step aside! If you're a patient with loose dentures due to advanced bone loss or resorption of the lower jaw, good fitting dentures like these can be applied. The challenges of conventional dentures don't have to dictate whether you are able to wear dentures or not. You now have another method to enjoy the look of natural teeth while improving your ability to chew. Nothing's floating, jiggling, or loose with SEMCD.

In order for SEMCD to work, the initial assessments are very important. This begins with looking at the maxilla and mandibular ridges. If a patient has existing dentures, they may be examined to judge how well they fit and how they could be improved. Saliva production is noted, a patient is interviewed about their needs, and from there, impressions can begin to be gathered.

A frame cut back tray is used to record the dental soft tissue's anatomical features and the bony structures. In making the impressions, a patient is encouraged to make specific movements. After the impressions are taken, a fitting takes place. Suction is tested, the occlusion is checked, and the patient is asked to make specific movements again to ensure there are no displacements.

Unfortunately, not all patients are candidates for successful suction dentures, however even for those who don't qualify, suction dentures are still more stable than conventional dentures. For some, other options may be more advantageous. For this reason, a thorough assessment has to be performed to determine whether one would benefit. Thankfully, approximately 80 percent of people are candidates for suction dentures.

Some oral structures may not be able to fit the full suction of lower dentures. If you've recently had teeth extracted, or have immediate or post-immediate dentures, they're not recommended right away as the gums will need take to heal. The shape and size of gums can change during their healing. If you are one of these patients, you may be recommended to return for a second assessment after a year has passed.

All in all, suction effective dentures are worth the investment for those who qualify, and potentially even for those who don't qualify. They're less bulky, and provide increased stability and superior function to standard dentures. Do your dentures lift, float, or fall out on a regular basis? Suction effective dentures won't have those problems. This revolutionary method of denture placement continues to catch on among Canadians seeking an alternative to permanent fixed dentures which are oftentimes more expensive.

Join the many other success stories out there from people who have opted in on SEMCD and enjoy simple pleasures like being able to enjoy some steak or a corn on the cob. Food you may have once thought you'd never be able to eat again, it's now possible with suction dentures.
