Understanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan: An In-Depth Look

A tooth with dental tools around it.

Here at Hayven Dentures, we understand how critical oral health is to your overall well-being. That's why we want to break down the essentials of the newly founded Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) for you.

What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

Launched in December 2023 by the federal government, the CDCP is a public program aimed at breaking down the financial barriers many Canadians face accessing oral health care. This is great news considering that in 2022, Statistics Canada reported that 35% of Canadians did not have dental insurance coverage leading to going more than one year since visiting the dentist.

Who’s eligible for the CDCP?

As with many public programs, there is certain criteria you must meet in order to access its services. To qualify for the CDCP, you must:

  • be a Canadian resident.
  • be without access to dental insurance which includes dental insurance through employer benefits, pension benefits, or professional or student organizations.
  • have an adjusted family net income less than $90,000.

What’s Covered?

To help keep Canadians’ gums and teeth healthy by treating and preventing oral health issues, the CDCP offers a comprehensive list of services. These services include:

  • Diagnostic and Preventative Services including x-rays, cleanings, and routine exams.
  • Basic Services such as permanent fillings (restorative), root canal treatments (endodontic), and treatment of abscesses (periodontal).
  • Major Services including more extensive restorative services like crowns, removable prosthodontic services such as complete dentures, and oral surgery needed to remove a tooth.

Dentures are Covered!

The launch of the CDCP is especially exciting for us at Hayven Dentures because we know first-hand the inclusion of removable prosthodontic services in the plan will significantly help individuals relying on dentures for everyday activities. Some of these types of services include:

How to Apply

As the CDCP is being rolled out in phases, the application process is following suit. As of March 2024, only senior Canadian citizens aged 70 and above can apply for dental coverage through the plan. However, the program will soon open to more qualified Canadians with the following schedule:

  • Seniors aged 65-69 can apply in starting May 2024.
  • Adults with valid Disability Tax Credit and Children under the age of 18 can apply starting in June 2024.
  • All other eligible Canadians can apply starting in 2025.

It is important to continue to check back on the CDCP’s site to stay up to date on the application schedule, expansion of services, and status of your application.

The introduction of the CDCP is a significant milestone in increasing accessibility to dental care for many Canadians. At Hayven Dentures, we are thrilled about the potential benefits this plan can bring to our patients.
